Cryptocurrency Scams

How It Works

Cryptocurrency scams often involve fraudulent investment schemes where seniors are lured into buying cryptocurrency or investing in fake projects. Scammers promise massive returns with minimal risk, leveraging the complexity and volatility of crypto to confuse victims. These scams are frequently connected to romance scams, where fraudsters build trust with their victims over time before introducing cryptocurrency investment opportunities. The scammer may claim to use a specialized system, algorithm, or even insider information to predict cryptocurrency trades, making the investment seem foolproof. In addition, investment groups on social media sites, particularly platforms like Facebook or WhatsApp, are often fronts for scams, targeting vulnerable individuals with promises of easy, guaranteed profits.

A newer tactic involves liquidity pool scams, where scammers entice victims to contribute cryptocurrency to a liquidity pool (a collection of funds used in decentralized finance). The fraudster then drains the pool and disappears with the funds.

How It Unfolds

You meet someone online through a dating app or social media. After gaining your trust, they introduce you to a new cryptocurrency investment opportunity. They claim that they’ve made huge profits using an algorithm or insider knowledge to predict market trends. Encouraged by their success stories, you join a social media investment group, which seems full of people praising their earnings. You decide to invest, sending your savings or cryptocurrency into the project. Weeks later, you check your account, only to find that the platform has disappeared along with your money—and so has your online "friend."

Red Flags

  • Guaranteed High Returns: Be skeptical of anyone promising massive returns on cryptocurrency investments with little or no risk. Cryptocurrency is highly volatile, and no legitimate investment guarantees profits.
  • Pressure to Act Quickly: Scammers often create urgency by telling you the opportunity is limited or that the price of the cryptocurrency is about to skyrocket. They want you to act without thinking or doing research.
  • Untraceable Transactions: Cryptocurrency transactions are difficult to trace and usually irreversible. Be wary if you’re asked to send payments via crypto or to join a liquidity pool without verifiable information.
  • Complex Jargon and Unclear Explanations: Scammers often use complex financial terms, claiming to use proprietary algorithms or insider trading knowledge to confuse and convince victims.
  • Social Media Investment Groups: Investment groups on platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, or Telegram may seem legitimate but are often scams designed to lure people into fraudulent schemes. Be wary of unsolicited investment advice from these groups.

Additional Warning:
Consult with a licensed financial advisor before investing in cryptocurrency. Do thorough research, including reading reviews and verifying the legitimacy of the platform or individual offering the investment. Avoid investment groups on social media unless you can verify their authenticity.
